A Diner That Closes at 3 PM? You Gotta Be Kidding Me. Review: Daily Eats (South Tampa)

Review: Daily Eats (South Tampa) I was told there was a "legendary diner" in South Tampa called Daily Eats . Now, listen. I grew up in the Tri-State area. I know diners. A real diner has a menu the size of a bible, a Greek owner who hasn't slept since 1986, and neon lights that buzz loud enough to give you tinnitus. Most importantly, a real diner is open when you need it—which is usually 2 AM. So I pull up to 901 S Howard Ave , ready for some grease and black coffee. The First Impression: "Potheads Welcome" The first thing I see is a sign that says "Potheads Welcome." In New York, that sign gets you a citation. Here, it’s apparently a cute joke about coffee pots. I smirked. Fine, you got me. But then I looked at the hours. 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Excuse me? The website literally says, "We believe you should always be able to eat breakfast for dinner." Listen, pal, if you close at 3 PM, that’s not dinner. That’s a late lunch for a Wall Street guy ...

Wait, You Guys Are From New York? That Explains Everything.

Review: Water + Flour (South Tampa) I’ve been running around Tampa for a week now, eating at all these places—Taco Dirty, Green Lemon, Jay Luigi. And every time, I’ve been scratching my head, thinking, "Why is this actually decent? Florida food isn't supposed to have this much hustle." I finally found the answer on the back of a menu at Water + Flour on South Howard. It started in New York City. I knew it. I knew it. My tastebuds don’t lie. You can take the restaurant out of New York, but you can’t take the New York out of the restaurant. The Origin Story Apparently, this whole "Ciccio Restaurant Group" empire began in NYC over 25 years ago with James Lanza. It’s named after his father, Frank "Ciccio" Lanza. Then, the classic betrayal happened: James came down to Tampa for a visit, saw the sun, saw that people here actually care about "healthy mindsets" (which I assume is code for "fitting into swimwear in December"), and decided ...

You Want Me to Eat "Fast Casual" Italian? In Florida? Review: Jay Luigi (St. Petersburg)

My friends in St. Pete told me we were going for Italian. I put on a nice shirt. I expected a tablecloth. I expected a guy named Sal to bring me bread that’s been sitting in a basket since 1998. Instead, we pulled up to Jay Luigi on 4th Street North, and they told me it’s " Fast Casual ." Listen, in New York, "fast casual Italian" usually means Sbarro at the airport. You grab a slice that tastes like cardboard and regret, and you move on. So, when I walked into this place and saw a counter, I was ready to turn around and fly back to JFK. But I stayed. And honestly? I’m confused. Because it was actually… good. Like, annoyingly good. The Setup: "We Don't Accept Cash" First red flag—or maybe green flag, depending on who you ask: "Please note we do not accept cash." I pulled out a wad of bills like I was at a deli in the Bronx, and the kid at the register looked at me like I was holding a stone tablet. Fine. I used the card. Welcome to the fu...

I Drank Blue Algae and I Didn't Hate It. Send Help. Review: Sweet Soul (South Tampa)

After surviving the tequila situation at Green Lemon (see my last review), I woke up with the kind of headache that usually requires a bacon-egg-and-cheese and a prayer. But my Tampa friends insisted we go to Sweet Soul . "It's a superfood bar," they said. "It's plant-based," they said. I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my own brain. In New York, "plant-based dessert" usually tastes like frozen cardboard and sadness. I walked in expecting to hate everything. The menu is full of puns like "Don’t Kale My Vibe" and "Luv U So Matcha." If a bodega guy in Queens said that to me, I’d call the cops. But listen... I might be losing my edge, because this place is actually legitimate. The Smoothies: No Ice, No Scams Here’s a scam I see in the City all the time: You pay $12 for a smoothie, and they fill the cup 60% with ice. You take three sips and it’s gone. I looked at the menu here. "Oatmeal Cookie" (Banana, Almond Milk, Oats,...

You Call This SoHo? Okay, I’m Listening. Review: Green Lemon (South Tampa)

Review: Green Lemon (South Tampa) Let’s address the elephant in the room immediately. My Tampa friends told me we were going to "SoHo" for dinner. As a New Yorker, "SoHo" means cobblestone streets, cast-iron buildings, and tourists walking too slow on Broadway. In Tampa, apparently, "SoHo" stands for South Howard Avenue. I wanted to roll my eyes. I wanted to make a joke about how cute it is that they tried. But then I walked into Green Lemon , and honestly? I shut up pretty quick. If Taco Dirty (which I tried last week) is the spot you grab a quick lunch at before rushing back to the office, Green Lemon is where you go when you’re ready to cause a little trouble. The Vibe: Loud, Just How I Like It New York restaurants are loud. We talk over each other, we yell over the subway rumbling underneath, we thrive in chaos. Green Lemon has that energy. You walk in, and the DJ is already spinning. The neon sign on the wall says "I Didn't Call You, Tequila ...
